Can You Use Google Maps in China? (2026 Guide + Alternatives)

Google Maps is blocked in China. Here are the best alternatives and workarounds for navigating China in 2026, including Amap, Baidu Maps, and Apple Maps.

The Short Answer

Google Maps is blocked in China. Even with a VPN, it's unreliable because Google doesn't have accurate map data for mainland China. You need alternatives.

The good news: China has excellent map apps that are actually better than Google Maps for navigating China.

Why Google Maps Doesn't Work in China

Two problems:

  • 1.It's blocked. Google services are behind the Great Firewall. Without a VPN, Google Maps won't even load.
  • 2.Even with a VPN, it's inaccurate. China uses a coordinate system called GCJ-02 (nicknamed "Mars Coordinates"). Google Maps uses WGS-84. The result? Your location shows 100-500 meters off from where you actually are. That's the difference between finding your hotel and ending up in a random alley.
  • The Best Alternatives (Ranked)

    1. Apple Maps (Easiest for iPhone Users)

Why it's great: Apple Maps uses Amap data in China, so it's actually accurate. If you have an iPhone, this is the zero-effort solution.

  • Accurate navigation in China
  • English interface
  • Transit directions (subway, bus)
  • No extra app to install
  • iPhone only
  • Less detailed than dedicated Chinese apps
  • 2. Amap / 高德地图 (Best Overall)

The gold standard for navigation in China. Used by 700+ million people. Think of it as China's Google Maps.

  • Most accurate maps in China
  • Real-time traffic and transit
  • English language support (partial)
  • Walking, driving, transit, cycling directions
  • Indoor maps for malls and airports
  • App is in Chinese (English mode is limited)
  • Can be overwhelming with features
  • Pro tip: Search destinations in Chinese characters. Copy-paste from your hotel booking or use Google Translate.

    3. Baidu Maps / 百度地图 (Most Detailed)

Similar to Amap but with even more local detail. Better for finding small restaurants and shops.

  • Extremely detailed
  • Street view available
  • AR walking navigation
  • Chinese only (no English)
  • Harder to use for foreigners
  • 4. Didi / 滴滴 (For Taxis)

Not a map app, but essential for getting around. China's Uber equivalent.

  • English interface available
  • Shows price before booking
  • Pay with Alipay or international card
  • No need to speak Chinese to the driver

Download Offline Maps Before You Go

Even though Google Maps is blocked, download offline maps before entering China. They're useful for:

  • General orientation (where am I relative to landmarks?)
  • Planning routes before you leave the hotel (on VPN)
  • Backup if other apps fail
  • How to download:

  • 1.Open Google Maps
  • 2.Search for the city you're visiting
  • 3.Tap your profile → Offline maps → Select your own map
  • 4.Draw the area and download
  • Do this for every city on your itinerary.

    Navigating the Subway

China's subway systems are incredible — clean, fast, cheap, and easy to use. Here's how:

  • 1.Amap shows real-time subway maps with English station names
  • 2.Apple Maps gives transit directions including subway
  • 3.Station signs are in Chinese AND English (Pinyin)
  • 4.Buy tickets at machines (English option available) or scan Alipay QR code
  • Most cities: ¥3-7 per ride ($0.40-$1.00). Way cheaper than taxis.

    Navigating High-Speed Rail Stations

    HSR stations are huge. Tips:

  • Arrive 30+ minutes early
  • Follow signs to your gate (检票口)
  • Your ticket shows: car number (车厢) and seat (座位)
  • Full HSR guide
  • Pro Tips

  • 1.Save your hotel address in Chinese. Screenshot it. Show it to taxi drivers.
  • 2.Learn basic direction words: 左 (zuǒ, left), 右 (yòu, right), 直走 (zhí zǒu, straight)
  • 3.Use WeChat location sharing when meeting people
  • 4.Download city-specific transit apps for real-time bus/subway info
  • 5.Amap has a "scan to translate" feature for signs
