WeChat Is Not Optional in China

If China has a national app, it's WeChat (微信). With over 1.3 billion users, WeChat isn't just a messaging app — it's the operating system of Chinese daily life:

  • Messaging — Text, voice, video calls
  • Payments — Pay for literally everything (alongside Alipay)
  • Mini-programs — Order food, book taxis, buy tickets, all within WeChat
  • Social media — Moments (like Instagram stories)
  • Official accounts — Follow brands, restaurants, attractions
  • Everything else — Book doctor appointments, pay utilities, government services
  • As a tourist, you need WeChat for:

  • Communicating with hotels, tour guides, locals
  • Paying at small shops that only accept WeChat Pay
  • Scanning QR codes (menus, attraction info, bike rentals)
  • Accessing mini-programs (metro tickets, food delivery)
  • How to Set Up WeChat

Step 1: Download Before You Fly

Download WeChat from the App Store or Google Play before arriving in China. The app is not blocked, but having it ready saves time.

    Step 2: Register

  • 1.Open WeChat → Sign Up
  • 2.Enter your phone number (your home country number works)
  • 3.Verify via SMS
  • 4.Set your profile name and photo
  • Important: WeChat may require an existing WeChat user to verify your account. If you get stuck, ask a Chinese friend or your hotel staff to help verify.

Step 3: Set Up WeChat Pay

Since 2023, foreign travelers can link international credit/debit cards to WeChat Pay:

  • 1.Go to Me → Services → Wallet
  • 2.Tap Cards → Add a Card
  • 3.Enter your Visa, Mastercard, or JCB card details
  • 4.Complete identity verification (passport photo)
  • 5.Done! You can now pay with WeChat
  • Limits: International cards are limited to ¥6,000 (~$800) per transaction and ¥50,000 (~$6,800) per year. For most tourists, this is more than enough.

Alternative: Set up Alipay as well. Having both gives you maximum coverage.

    Essential WeChat Features for Travelers

    QR Code Scanner

China runs on QR codes. Use WeChat's scanner for:

  • Restaurant menus
  • Shared bike rentals (Meituan Bike, Hellobike)
  • Attraction tickets
  • Making friends (people share QR codes instead of phone numbers)
  • How: Open WeChat → tap the + button → Scan

    Mini-Programs (小程序)

Mini-programs are apps within WeChat. No download needed. Essential ones:

  • Didi (滴滴) — Ride-hailing (China's Uber)
  • Meituan (美团) — Food delivery, restaurant deals
  • 12306 — Train tickets
  • Metro QR codes — Scan to enter subway in most cities
  • How to find: WeChat → Discover → Mini Programs → Search

    Translate

    WeChat has a built-in translator:

  • 1.Long-press any Chinese message
  • 2.Tap Translate
  • 3.Reads in English (or your language)
  • Works for text in chats and on Moments. Lifesaver when your hotel sends Chinese instructions.

    Location Sharing

Share your live location with travel companions:

  • 1.Open a chat → tap +
  • 2.Location → Share Real-time Location
  • 3.Others can see your position on the map
  • Great for meeting up in crowded areas.

    WeChat Etiquette in China

  • Add everyone — Hotel staff, tour guides, drivers, new friends. WeChat is the default way to stay in touch.
  • Voice messages are normal — Chinese users send voice messages constantly. Don't be surprised.
  • Red envelopes (红包) — Digital cash gifts. If someone sends you one, it's polite to open it and say thanks.
  • Moments — WeChat's social feed. Posting travel photos here is a great way to share with Chinese friends.
  • Don't spam groups — If added to a group chat, follow the vibe. Don't flood it.
  • Troubleshooting

    "Account restricted" or can't register?

    WeChat has anti-spam measures. Try:

  • 1.Use a different phone number
  • 2.Ask a WeChat user to verify you (they need to have used WeChat for 6+ months)
  • 3.Contact WeChat support in-app
  • Can't add international card to WeChat Pay?

  • Make sure your card supports international online transactions
  • Try a different card (Visa tends to work best)
  • Some banks block Chinese payment platforms — call your bank to whitelist it
  • Voice/video calls not working?

You need a VPN or eSIM with bypass for the initial setup if you're on Chinese Wi-Fi. Once set up, WeChat calls work natively.

    FAQ

Can I use WeChat outside China?

Yes! WeChat works worldwide. Set it up at home and you're ready when you land.

    Is WeChat safe?

WeChat messages are not end-to-end encrypted. Assume anything you send could theoretically be monitored. Don't discuss sensitive topics. For private communication, use Signal (via VPN).

Do I need both WeChat Pay and Alipay?

Having both is ideal. Some small vendors only accept one or the other. But if you must choose one, Alipay is slightly easier for foreigners to set up.

    Get Ready for China
