The Only Packing List You Need for China

Most China packing lists are bloated with obvious stuff (yes, bring underwear). This list focuses on what's different about China — the things you'll kick yourself for forgetting.

🔴 Critical: Do Before Packing

These aren't things to pack. They're things to set up on your phone before you leave home:

  • 1.eSIM for China — Install before your flight. No internet at the airport without it.
  • 2.Alipay — Link your card. China is 99% cashless.
  • 3.WeChatDownload and register. You'll need it daily.
  • 4.VPN — Install if you need Wi-Fi access to Google/WhatsApp.
  • 5.Offline maps — Download your destination areas in Google Maps or Maps.me.
  • 6.Translate app — Google Translate with Chinese offline pack downloaded.
  • Do all of this BEFORE boarding. Not at the airport. Not on the plane. Before.

    📱 Tech Essentials

    ItemWhy
**Power bank (20,000mAh+)**Your phone IS your wallet, map, translator, and communication tool. Dead phone = helpless.
    **USB-C cable**Charge everywhere. Bring 2.
**Universal power adapter**China uses Type A (US-style) and Type I (angled). Most hotels have USB ports.
**Earbuds/headphones**Bullet trains are quiet zones. Others may not be.

Skip: Laptop (unless working), camera (your phone is fine), portable Wi-Fi (eSIM is better).

    📄 Documents

    DocumentNotes
    **Passport**6+ months validity required
**Passport copies**2 printed copies + photo on phone. Hotels need your passport number constantly.
**Hotel booking confirmations**In English AND Chinese. Print or screenshot.
    **Onward travel ticket**Required for [144-hour visa-free transit](/blog/china-visa-free-transit-144-hours)
**Travel insurance proof**Not required, strongly recommended
**Vaccination records**Not currently required for entry (as of March 2026)

Pro tip: Save your hotel's address in Chinese characters on your phone. Show it to taxi drivers who don't speak English.

    👕 Clothing Tips

    General rules:

  • China has excellent laundry services (cheap hotel laundry or street laundrettes). Pack for 4-5 days even for longer trips.
  • Dress modestly for temples — cover shoulders and knees.
  • Comfortable walking shoes are #1 priority. You'll walk 15,000-20,000 steps daily.
  • By season:

  • Spring (Mar-May): Layers. Can be 10°C in the morning, 25°C by afternoon.
  • Summer (Jun-Aug): Light, breathable clothes. It's HOT and humid (35-40°C). Bring a mini fan.
  • Autumn (Sep-Nov): Best weather. Light jacket for evenings.
  • Winter (Dec-Feb): Northern China gets brutal (-15°C in Beijing). Serious winter gear needed.
  • Skip: Formal wear (China is casual), excessive outfit changes (nobody cares), bulky jackets in summer.

    💊 Health & Hygiene

    ItemWhy
**Toilet paper / tissues**Many public toilets don't supply it. ALWAYS carry some.
    **Hand sanitizer**Soap isn't always available
**Basic meds**Ibuprofen, antihistamines, antidiarrheal (your stomach WILL be tested)
**Prescription meds**Bring originals in labeled bottles with doctor's note
**Sunscreen**Strong UV, especially at altitude (Yunnan, Tibet)
    **Insect repellent**Southern China in summer

Don't bring: Excessive first aid supplies (pharmacies are everywhere and cheap).

    💰 Money

  • Small amount of cash — ¥500-1,000 (~$70-140) for emergencies. Some street food vendors and taxis still use cash.
  • Wise/Revolut card — Best exchange rates, works in ATMs
  • International credit card — Visa/Mastercard as backup. Not widely accepted for daily purchases.
  • Alipay + WeChat Pay — Your primary payment method. Set up Alipay here.
  • 🎒 Nice to Have

  • Reusable water bottle — Hot water stations everywhere (Chinese drink hot water)
  • Ziplock bags — For wet wipes, snacks, keeping phone dry
  • Pen — For arrival/departure cards
  • Neck pillow — For long train rides
  • Snacks from home — When you need comfort food
  • ❌ Don't Bring

  • Excessive cash — You'll use mobile payments for 95% of purchases
  • Guidebook — Your phone replaces it entirely
  • Too many clothes — Laundry is cheap
  • Expectations of Western food — Embrace Chinese food. It's incredible.
  • VPN router — Overkill. An eSIM handles it.
  • Pre-Flight Checklist

Before you leave for the airport:
